Back to Work...But Not For Long...!
I am glad that I was able to lose something while battling this pneumonia. It started with a fever on Thursday, January 26th while I was at work. I didn't go on Friday, January 27th. I tried going back on Monday, January 30th, but called from there to get an appointment at 10:30AM. I had a sinus infection that had moved into my lungs (I have chronic asthma and am I diabetic.) It eventually turned into pneumonia and I missed work the entire month of February.
I finally have it under control, and although still on antibiotics, my doctor told me that I could go back to work for the first time today. I am a Title 1 Reading and Reading Recovery Teacher. We have one retired teacher qualified to sub for me, so I had a substitute teacher about one-third of the 22 3/4 days I missed.
I had been at work for about 35 minutes, trying to get caught up on my paperwork, when I came across a letter dated February 27, stating that there was a confirmed case of one of our students having aseptic(viral) meningitis.
I wondered if this was something I should be concerned about as the doctor had told me that I would need to be careful for the next 6 months to a year as my immune system is currently very susceptible to illnesses. We don't have a full-time nurse, but our guidance counselor is an EMT with our local volunteer fire department, so I asked her. Her face went pale and she said, "You better call your doctor right away, I don't think he would have let you come back if he had known about the case of meningitis." (I work in a county about an hour from where I live.)
So I went to my office and called my doctor. The nurse who answered, turned and asked him, and I heard him say, "Tell her to get out of there IMMEDIATELY!"
I gathered up my things, told the principal what the doctor said and he said, "THEN GO! GO! GO!" So I am back home again! After calls to the Superintendant, the county health department, and my doctors office, it was decided that I need to stay away until Monday, March 6, as long as there are no more cases at school.
The school and/or the health department will contact me, if any other cases come up. Who would have thought?
I am feeling better and I get to start exercising again on Saturday! Yeah! I haven't been allowed to exercise for most of this time. I will start slowly!
Oh, I do get to go to a conference for work tomorrow away from the school in a different county. So I hope that will go well!
